What’s in a Coach?: Discovery

When we are children, everyday is full of discovery. There is so much to learn that every encounter has the potential to be delightful – we embrace the world around us as a teacher and constantly want to know: WHY?

This pursuit of the Why often fades as we are consumed with the urgency of our daily responsibilities. We lose the collective wonder and opt instead for just knowing WHAT is next.

As a recent Huffington Post article noted, “The effects of self-discovery include happiness, fulfillment, clarity and maybe even enlightenment! The journey however is not always an easy road. The journey includes fear, confusion, misunderstanding, doubt and literally re-visiting all your choices in life.”

In pursuit of clarity, one might encounter hurtful memories or unpleasant decisions from years past. As you seek fulfillment, you may discover your developed behaviors are not serving you well any longer.

Coaches help you sort issues and cultivate the curiosity and wonder of WHY! An excellent coach hears, notes, and illuminates moments of discovery. They do this by asking key questions to find critical insight.

A coach may ask: What do you value?

You may respond, “Time with family, a supportive network, and a feeling that you are making a difference in someone’s life.” Or you may say, “Financial independence, a sense of personal achievement, and the need for control.” Both responses are valid and may be shaping your daily choices…or you may be denying your values. Coaches can help you sort which is which, helping your create a sense of clarity as you pursue your purpose.
